History

The city of Gunbarrel is named after the first rudimentary road to bisect this now desirable suburb of Boulder.  A homesteader by the name of Alonzo Allen cut the road into the soil of the plains in the mid-1800s as he relocated his cabin from north Boulder to the town of Longmont.  His path was described as "straight as a gunbarrel".  This aptly named road became the main stage coach route between Boulder and Gunbarrel.  Historically, the area was farmland.  It transitioned to residential to accommodate the demand for executive housing in the mid-1960s when IBM established its headquarters in the area.  The Boulder Country Club was relocated to Gunbarrel during the same time period.  Today, Gunbarrel is redefining its reputation as a hotspot for trendy breweries, eateries, and diverse hiking trails all within walking & biking distance of most housing developments.
