About Superior
Superior has roots in cool mining and today is predominantly residentially-focused with great shopping located on the outskirts of the town's largest residential development, which is named Rock Creek Ranch. Rock Creek is a master-planned community complete with two pools, 4 parks, 12 playgrounds, and 27 miles of walking paths. Two Boulder Valley School District public schools, Superior Elementary and Eldorado K-8, are also located within the community. There are approximately 2,700 single-family homes and 1,800 townhomes and/or condominiums located within Rock Creek. Residents are eagerly anticipating the completion of the town's development of a proper downtown district, known as Downtown Superior, which will include a pedestrian promenade lined with restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, medical facilities, and retail. Six residential builders are currently offering a variety of single-family and townhome-style residences within the development as well. See our related blog post for more detail. Folks are drawn to the small-town, family-friendly dynamic of Superior while also benefitting from easy access to Boulder (10 minutes) and Denver (25 minutes) via Highway 36 and also to Denver International Airport (40 minutes) via the Northwest Parkway toll road.

Learn More About Living in Superior
History
Similar to Louisville, the city was founded in the late 1800’s as a coal mining town. The city’s name is a reference to the superior quality of coal mined in the region. Superior evolved into a ranch and farm community when mining dissipated in the mid-1900’s.
Layout
Superior is located southwest of Boulder, on the west side of Highway 36. It is adjacent to Louisville. The city’s residential section is located between a small shopping district on the south end of town close to the Flatirons Crossing Mall and a large shopping district in the north east corner of town. Most of the 4,500 residences in Superior are located in the Rock Creek neighborhood. Northeast Superior is undergoing major expansion with the development of Downtown Superior. This new master planned area will provide Superior with a dedicated downtown district complete with medical, retail, business and recreation facilities as well as approximately 1,400 residences. The Sports Stable was the first facility to be built and includes three indoor ice rinks, a strength training gym, a pro shop, physical therapists, a restaurant, and a coffee house. Part of the city’s 27 mile trail system connects with Louisville’s and ultimately parts of South Boulder while extensive paved paths connect to multiple parks.
